MUSIC EVENTS AND SCHEDULE
Here you will find my own events, both private and public, information about vocal jazz jams around the Seattle area in general, and Vocal Jams and Vocal Showcases at Egan's Ballard Jam House, one of my favorite local jazz clubs. If you are jazz singer, or aspiring jazz singer, you might want to consider coming out to join our friendly community of vocalists.
Marti's Upcoming Events
Saturday, Dec. 5, 2009 - Dinner concert at Fisher House.
My friend and fellow therapist Randi Jensen and I join forces to present a dinner concert for the families living at Fisher House, a non-profit residence for the families of veterans in treatment at the VA Hospital. Randi is coordinating the dinner and I will be singing, backed up by jazz and blues pianist, Beth Wulff.
Egan’s Ballard Jam House, www.ballardjamhouse.com, holds vocal jams on the 2nd and 4th and, if there is one, 5th Wednesday nights of the month from 9 to 11PM. Outstanding musicians are provided who are generous enough to play for a split of the $5 cover and the contents of the tip hat. One singer volunteers to host the jam to keep us all rolling. The club covers its costs, and can continue to offer us a such great place to play and sing, with the food and drink that singers and other guests enjoy while they are at the club. We get to have a party every Wednesday night, sing a little ourselves, and support each other as jazz singers. A win-win-win-win situation.
Do come out and join us! If you would like to sing, put your name on the list (that you will find somewhere) and the host will call you up in order. Please have charts of your song(s) in your key for the musicians and spend as little time as possible explaining the arrangement to the band. That way more of us get to sing and enjoy each others' singing. It’s a great time for all. See you there!
Vocal Jazz Jams
Tula's Jazz Club, www.tulas.com, holds vocal jams on the 1st and 3rd Monday nights from 7:30 to 11:30. The first Monday is hosted by Greta Matassa, and the third Monday by the Darin Clendenin Trio. There is an $8 cover at Tula's. Once again, look for the sign-up sheet when you come in.
Cafe Amore, www.tastofamore.com, holds vocal jams on Thursday nights in their Theatre Lounge from 8 to 10. There is no cover. Come and sit in with Aria Prame. (Except in December, 2009. They will resume in January.)
If you know of more vocal jam opportunities in the Seattle area, please let me know so that I can list them here.
Vocal Jazz Showcases at Egan's
On the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of the month from 9 to 11, Egan's Ballard Jam House hosts a Vocal Showcase. Three jazz vocalists share the show to present their talents, backed by an outstanding professional jazz trio. We invite you to come hear the vocalists and the musicians, and if you are a jazz musician or vocalist, come check it out.
How it works:
The Vocal Showcase at Egan’s Ballard Jam House is an opportunity for three singers to share a show and be backed by an outstanding professional jazz trio.
The Showcase is open to singers who already do their own shows and to singers who are ready to step out beyond the usual vocal jam. It is an opportunity to sing more than the usual one or two songs at a jam, but not have to be totally responsible for the whole show yourself. The musicians are provided, just like a regular vocal jam, so you don’t need to hire your own musicians. And you don’t need to fill the house yourself. If each singer brings 10 or 15 audience members, there will be a full house for all of the singers to perform for, and each singer will get to perform for people they don’t know as well as just their own fans.
Each singer has a half-hour set. This allows time for a break, transitions, etc. Depending on how long the songs are and how many solos you give to the musicians, that’s probably 5 to 7 songs.
The musicians request that you bring charts in your key for them to work from. And, of course, the less time you talk arrangements with the musicians for each tune, the more entertaining it is for the audience and the more you get to sing. If you want prep time with the musicians, you can certainly contact them separately to arrange that.
Each Showcase also has a volunteer emcee. Although it’s not a singing part, the emcee can really set the tone and is the glue that holds it all together. The emcee introduces the band and singers, keeps track of the time and keeps things rolling and completes the evening. It’s a big part of creating an “event”.
Mark your calendars, and thanks for wanting to be part of an Egan’s Vocal Jams and Showcases.

Note: I volunteer to arrange the musicians and hosts for the Vocal Jams, and the musicians, emcee and singers for the Vocal Showcases at Egan's.
